How can you get your school involved?If your school or a school you know would like to get involved with Science Bus, please send an email to contact.sciencebus@gmail.com. Because our ability to visit schools depends on the schedules of our volunteers, we cannot guarantee we will be able to accommodate your school. However, we are dedicated to expanding our community involvement so we will do all that we can to involve your students in our program. Science Bus prefers to work at the 4th or 5th grade level (since that is the target age audience of our lessons), and ideally we would visit an entire grade level at your school to guarantee continuity of experience among the students. Email us at the address above and we can discuss setting up a program at your school! How can you get involved as a college student? There are a number of different ways to become involved with science bus, each with a varying time commitment which can fit your schedule. The first (and most impactful!) is to become an outreach teacher. You would visit an elementary school classroom once a week to teach a one-hour science lesson developed by our lesson writing committee. Because continuity in teachers is very important to the elementary school students, we ask that you try to make this a firm commitment. However, in the case where we do need substitutes, you could add your name to a list of "stand-in" outreach teachers. Another way in which to become involved is to join one of our committees. You can help write lessons, plan the annual Science Day event, or help organize our newly added High School Leadership Program. Each of these have varying time commitments, but are generally less demanding on your time than weekly teaching in a school. The best way to get involved is to ask us a question (email contact.sciencebus@gmail.com) or join our mailing list. To join the mailing list, you can either ask us to add you (by email), or send a message to listkeeper@hmc.edu with the words "subscribe sciencebus-l [your email here]" in the body of the message and follow the authorization instructions sent by the HMC automated list keeper. If you have issues, email us and we'd be happy to help. The email list will keep you up to date on upcoming meetings, as well as other information about the club.
