HMC Science Bus

Science Bus Programs

The HMC Science Bus is slowly expanding to offer more programs geared towards elementary school science education.  Browse around below to see what we have to offer!

Elementary School Programs
In the Classroom
Science Bus has been visiting 3rd-6th grade classrooms in Pomona and Claremont for over three years, offering hands-on, interactive science lessons to students at those schools.  To learn more about our core science offerings, click here.

Science Fair
Science Bus started a pilot after school program in spring of 2009 which brought together leaders in the high school community with elementary school students at Montvue Elementary to learn about the scientific method.  The high school students mentored the younger students through a science fair project, which culminated in a poster presentation at Montvue's Science and Technology night.  The program was a huge success, and we plan to offer a second session during the fall of 2009.  To learn more, click here.

Community Outreach
Science Bus hosts an annual Science Day at Harvey Mudd in which students and their families from the surrounding community participate in a day of science-related activities and competitions.  We make liquid nitrogen ice cream during lunch!

Science Bus was also invited to participate in the first annual San Diego Science Festival.  We hope to do more community outreach as our program continues to grow in the coming years.

Online
Science Bus has just launched a new program - "Ask a Scientist!"  Students can ask any question they have about science, and our team of researchers at Science Bus will find the answer and write back.  To learn more and ask a question, click here.

High School Programs
High School Leadership Program
Science Bus has recently finished a High School Leadership Program, which offers dedicated high school students the opportunity to become leaders in their community.  Interested students apply online, and those who are accepted attend a leadership retreat at Harvey Mudd where they learn about good teaching practices and are involved first hand in creating an after school science program for elementary school students.  Last year, the high school students were involved in mentoring a group of younger students through a science fair project at Montvue Elementary School.  For more information, visit our High School Leadership Program page.
